It looks like we'll be learning more about the next-gen PlayStation soon.

In early 2024, Sony Senior Vice President Naomi Matsuoka He told Bloomberg “Looking ahead, the PS5 will enter the final phase of its lifecycle.” While he didn't explicitly say that a PlayStation 6 is in the works, we can assume the company is looking at its next console.

While these are just rumors, it’s never too early to start speculating about the next-gen consoles. How will the PS6 compare to the PS5? Will any of the best games from the PS5 be coming to the PS6? And what about the upcoming PS5 games?

Nothing is certain yet, but let's take a look at what the future of PlayStation could look like.

PS6 release date speculations

The biggest clue about when the PS6 could be coming out, or at least that it was planned at some point, is 2027. This information comes from an official source. Microsoft court document As part of the Activision Blizzard acquisition: “When SIE launches the next generation of the PlayStation console (which will probably happen around 1999) [redacted]), would lose access to Call of Duty.” The date is censored here, but detectives have connected the dots between this and the deal Microsoft offered Sony to keep Activision Blizzard games on PlayStation consoles until 2027. This suggests Microsoft doesn't believe a new PlayStation is coming before 2027 at the earliest.

If we look at past generations, this timeframe is in line with the lifespans of past generations. The PlayStation 4 had seven years before the PS5 came out, and the PlayStation 3 had seven years before its successor. The PS5 was released in 2020, meaning 2027 would once again leave us with a seven-year console cycle. We wouldn’t exactly put our money on 2027, but anything from late 2027 onwards seems like a safe bet.

It’s impossible to even estimate the price of a PS6 with any certainty. Until we have definitive details about the specs inside, we can’t even come up with a rough estimate of what it will cost. However, based on past pricing and rumors, it’s hard to imagine it will sell for less than $500 at launch, or even close to the feared $600.

The PS6's exact specifications are a bit limited. Moore's Law Is Dead He stated that he was “100% confident that Sony will continue its partnership with AMD to power the PS6 and PS5 Pro.” That would make sense because that's the same chipset used in the PS5, so sticking with that would make things like backwards compatibility and cross-gen gaming much easier. The next-gen AMD chips are scheduled to be released in 2025, so that could be the chipset the PS6 will be built on.

We're assuming a new SSD will be included, as the PS5 is making a big push to almost completely reduce loading times, but no information has been leaked on this subject yet.

When the PS6 comes out, we can expect at least 1TB of storage, especially if the console will be digital-only.

Ps6 features

Insider Gaming claims to have a document about a very unique feature being worked on for the PS6 called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). The technology will reportedly allow games to run in 4K at 120 frames per second (fps) or 8K at 60 frames per second (fps). According to Insider GamingA weaker version of PSSR is said to be integrated into the PS5 Pro, but will be fully utilized on the PS6.
