in 2011 Sonic Generations came up with a unique idea: combining Sonic's classic 2D side-scrolling self with his modern 3D self. This made for a fun mix of two different levels of Sonic. A lot has changed since then. with 2022s Sonic LimitsFor example, the series has finally taken the next step towards open world.

Now, Sonic Generations It's making a big comeback, remastered for modern consoles. But the main star is the brooding Shadow the Hedgehog, who joins Sonic in the new packed game. Sonic X Shadow Generations. Here, Shadow Generations It acts as a completely standalone adventure and once again shakes up the Sonic formula – this time within the scope of a remaster.

Digital Trends spent about 40 minutes Sonic X Shadow Generations At the Summer Game Festival. As much as we can play, Shadow Generations It's a solid addition to the original game, with some surprisingly cinematic moments. And even seems to have borrowed their best aspects sonic Borders, Including its challenge and presentation. This makes for a worthy (and long overdue) successor to Shadow the Hedgehog's standalone 2005 adventure.

Space race

Half of my demo In the Shadow, I started with Space Colony Ark Act 1. Its setting is space, which already makes it stand out in the remaster. The level is primarily 3D, much like modern Sonic games, complete with the typical power-up panels and rail sliding you'd expect from the series.

Sonic Generations It introduced the Boost mechanic, where Sonic can build up a meter by attacking enemies and collecting rings, then unleash a devastating burst of speed that can destroy anything in its path. Shadow Generations It brings back the mechanic for Shadow to use, and also introduces a new one called Chaos Control. By creating a separate meter, Shadow can freeze time for about five seconds and paint the screen a ghostly green hue to use incoming objects, such as missiles, as platforms. Shadow also leaves a blue ghost behind whenever he uses his homing attack. Both of these aspects show how much cooler he is than his blue counterpart.

The level eventually broke down as you progressed through Space Colony Ark Part 1. Reality became distorted as buildings turned upside down. It created a strange effect that was an explosion to go through. Sounds like something from the Mirror Dimension Dr. Strange movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

At the end of the level, I was greeted by Doom's Eye, one of Shadow's greatest enemies. In one mini-boss fight, I was able to use Shadow's homing attacks to launch the eye's robot companion into its shield, eventually causing it to retreat. Space Colony Ark Act 1 is an exciting opening level and gave me a small taste of what we can expect from the level design. Shadow Generations. The game is also said to have a similar open world hub. Limitsbut it wasn't in the demo.

An old enemy returns

The second Shadow level I played was a boss fight against Biolizard. Sonic Adventures 2A giant reptile with wires coming out of its back. A small detail that caught my attention here was this: Shadow Generation's loading screens. They have a stylized red and black flavor, making them look exactly like something out there. Personality. Considering Shadow's more edgy and rebellious personality, he's an incredible fit here.

The boss fight was structured like this: Sonic Limits. The first stage was simple; All Shadow had to do was avoid getting hit until he found an opening to attack the Biolizard's central core. The second stage was a little more difficult, as Biolizard grew two large appendages and slammed them into the ground, constantly emitting shockwaves. Here Shadow needs to wait until the Biolizard gets stuck and then attack the appendages.

It's a stunningly cinematic conflict. Biolizard grabs onto the side of the arena and shoots a ton of energy balls down. By mashing the Y button on the Xbox controller, Shadow can create Chaos Spears to drop balls and create the Chaos Control gauge. At one point, Biolizard creates a giant ball of energy to crush Shadow. Using Chaos Control, Shadow is able to stop the attack and send it back to Biolizard.

With this final attack, Shadow takes out Biolizard with loud electric guitars in the background. One of the highlights Sonic Limits It was his music and I'm glad it was Shadow Generations is back with some great songs to listen to.

shadow levels generations Although it may not have the whimsical tone of his 2005 adventure, it looks like it'll be a fun return for the black hedgehog. This cult classic is a strange stab at a “mature” tone, full of guns and swearing. These elements are absent here so far, but I'm secretly hoping they'll make a return. Let Shadow say “damn” again!

Sonic X Shadow Generations It will be released on October 25 for PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
